Anyone who knows Manchester will know King Street. Despite the city’s many changes over the centuries, King Street has always been one of Manchester’s major thoroughfares. Once the city’s financial centre, it is now mostly fancy shops and boutique hotels. But while the businesses may have changed, many of King Street’s old bank buildings still stand, and 100 King Street is perhaps the most prominent of them all.

‘The King of King Street’, some people call it, and it’s easy to see why: surrounded by roads on all four sides, this huge building stands out from every other on the street. It’s distinctive neoclassical features set it apart from the city’s dominant neogothic style, but its castle-like Art Deco structure make it look like something out of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Or maybe it reminds you of Batman’s Gotham City – the upper floors are actually home to a hotel called Hotel Gotham.

This design shows 100 King Street at night, its imposing Portland stone façade lit up from below. Any true Mancunian is sure to fall in love with this tea towel!
