Description:

This is the 56th collection of Liszt's complete piano works. Liszt made many revisions to his own works, which he was very attached to, and this "Poetic and Religious Tunes" is one such collection. The most well-known of these is the suite of 10 pieces from the third draft of S.173 from 1853, but the centerpiece of this album is the eight pieces from the first draft of S.171d, published in 2001. The core of this album consists of eight pieces from the first draft S.171d, published in 2001. The scores were revised by Leslie Howard, who is known for his recordings of Liszt's complete piano works. Track 10 is the earliest work, composed alone and later revised into the fourth piece, "Remembrance of the Dead". Track 1 is the prototype for track 6, "Hymn to a Child Awakened from Sleep," which was such a favorite of Liszt that it was reworked as a separate choral piece. Track 2, "Prelude," shows the evolution of Liszt's feelings toward the piece, as the phrase is used in the third piece, "God's Blessing in Solitude. Other fragmentary works are also included.
