Jimmy Smith was a self-taught pianist, but in 1954 he abandoned his instrument for the Hammond B3 organ, rented a warehouse in Philadelphia, chopped wood for a year, and quickly caught Alfred Lion's ear with his revolutionary style. Blue Note bosses called him "The incredible Jimmy Smith," and between 1956 and 1963 he recorded this B3 innovator as often as he could.On April 25, 1960, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Stanley Taletine on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums, Smith recorded two soul-jazz classics, "Midnight Special" and "Back at the Chicken Shack," a testament to his volcanic creativity.
