Why this kit matters

The Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe was developed in the early 1960s as a heavy-lift helicopter for the United States Army. Its unusual open-frame body allowed it to carry oversized cargo suspended beneath the aircraft, including artillery, vehicles, construction equipment, and damaged aircraft. The design was based on the earlier Sikorsky S-64 and focused on lifting power rather than enclosed transport space.

The CH-54A saw extensive service during the Vietnam War, where it recovered downed helicopters, moved heavy military equipment, and supplied remote bases in difficult terrain. Its lifting ability made it one of the most valuable support aircraft of the period. Civilian versions later became well known for firefighting and heavy construction work, extending the aircraft’s service life far beyond military use.
