Soumak Kilims, made by the Baloch people on the Persia-Afghan border, are handwoven using a unique type of flat weave with a smooth front face and a ragged back. Unlike most kilims, the back is left ragged, with all the loose ends of the differently colored weft threads visible, providing extra thickness and warmth.
Most designs consist of geometric patterns with tribal motifs from different regions. The primary colors are earthy tones; red, brown, green, and cream, working together to bring an earthy honesty to an interior.
