The famous conductor Claudio Abbado's first career was as a pianist, and at the age of 19 he played a concerto by J.S. Bach in front of Toscanini, who was a friend of his father. He played the piano solo in the "Cambini: Piano Concerto" recorded here, and his father, Michelangelo Abbado, one of Italy's most famous violin teachers and principal of the Verdi Conservatory, conducted him from 1956. He studied conducting with Swarovski and made his conducting debut in 1959. The recordings here are rare authentic recordings of Abbado playing piano, harpsichord, and conducting between 1954 and 1962.
