A long-awaited gift to all mankind! This is a milestone in Mahler performance. There is no need to say anything about the excellence of Haitink's performance of Mahler (1860-1911), which he completed in the 1970s with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, winning the Grand Prix du Disque de France and the Dutch Edison Award in 1972, and which was highly acclaimed in Europe. In Japan at that time, however, the Mahler cycle was not well received by the public. However, in Japan at that time, people tended to focus on Mahler's enormity and magnificence, and compared to the intense performances by Bernstein and Solti, the performances by Kubelík and Haitink were perhaps perceived as understated or unremarkable. It goes without saying, however, that Haitink's nourishing performances began to be appreciated from the 1980s onward. His music is always smooth, full-sounding, and above all, full of deep musical empathy. His reputation is slowly growing, and since the beginning of the 21st century, Haitink's music is said to be "never out of place. It is no exaggeration to say that Haitink has reached the peak of his maturity. The December performance was originally scheduled to be conducted by Jansons, but due to his poor health, Haitink took the podium at short notice. From the first movement, which begins with an easygoing ease, the music is straightforward without any pedantry. There is no pedantic interpretation, but only a lineup of inevitable sounds.The tempo is not shaken more than necessary, and it can be said to be extremely orthodox Mahler.
