Zubin Mehta, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Description:
What a first recording by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Zubin Mehta. This is the first re-recording of Tchaikovsky's Fifth in 36 years, since his 1977 recording with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Decca). Mehta has conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra many times, and in the fall of 2018 he conducted a Japan tour in place of Jansons, who had to cancel due to sudden illness. In January 2020, Mehta was asked to conduct the Jansons memorial concert. It is surprising that there has been no LP or CD (according to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) despite such a strong relationship of trust. This album was recorded during concerts held in February and March 2013. Tchaikovsky's Fifth takes a slightly slower tempo than the Los Angeles Philharmonic recording, with the exception of the third movement, and the singing melody that is the charm of this piece is heard well. Mazeppa" is one of Mehta's specialties, and the orchestra, with its outstanding functionality, delivers a gorgeous sound and plenty of exuberance. Naxos Japan
