Beautiful "Silver Lady", a ghost gum (Corymbia aparrerinja) stands tall and alone in a rock amphitheatre in The West MacDonnell Ranges, west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. These sparse trees with their slender white trunks inhabit rocky cliffs and the margins of ephemeral waterways in this harsh dry land. They provide a visual relief to the red and black rock and the sparse, tough, low vegetation of spinifex (Hummock Grass - Triodia and Plectrachne) and zamia palms (Macrozamia macdonnellii) that share this environment. They are able to find the little moisture they need deep in the earth and rock structures and are often seen clinging to the most improbable and unpromising locations high on a cliff face.
