The AFI FLAT.DUO is a German-designed and manufactured system for the controlled treatment of vinyl and shellac records. It combines precisely regulated thermal energy, calibrated contact pressure and stabilized active cooling to ensure repeatable, material-safe results.

FLAT.DUO operates in three dedicated modes:

Relaxing (thermal tempering) for the reduction of internal stresses within vinyl

Flattening for the correction of measurable record warpage

Shellac mode with specifically adapted temperature parameters for fragile materials

Temperature gradients are tightly controlled to prevent material shock. Fixed pressure rings mounted to aluminum heating plates apply defined, torque-controlled contact pressure, ensuring uniform heat transfer across the record surface. A managed cooling phase stabilizes the material before removal, reducing the risk of reintroduced stress.

Dual-disc operation enables two records to be processed simultaneously within the same cycle. In combination with active cooling, this significantly increases operational efficiency while maintaining identical thermal and pressure conditions for both discs.

Audiophile Application: Relaxing as Material Optimization

In high-performance analogue playback systems, residual internal stress within vinyl can influence groove stability and stylus behavior. Even records that appear visually flat may exhibit micro-deformation or tension resulting from pressing, storage or environmental exposure.

The relaxing mode functions as a controlled tempering process. By applying low, precisely regulated heat over a defined time sequence, the vinyl polymer structure is allowed to rebalance and settle into a more uniform mechanical state. The subsequent stabilized cooling phase preserves this equilibrium.
