In this workshop we will explore sashiko, a striking Japanese hand-sewing technique. Traditionally used to mend textiles, sashiko can just as easily be used to embellish clothing and fabrics around the home. Requiring no special equipment other than a sewing needle and thread, it is a centuries-old embroidery technique that not only strengthens but intricately adorns fabric, bringing it new life.

In feudal Japan, when clothing was made completely from scratch – the raw materials grown, the fiber spun, the fabric woven and dyed, and the articles of clothing sewn together by hand – it was important to make every piece last for as long as possible, even over generations. So, each item would evolve over time – a formal dress would eventually become an everyday dress, then a bed cover, then someday a dust rag. The most heavily patched items would become boro (meaning tattered) but ironically, vintage boro jackets are now highly prized and extremely rare!

Today, we have access to fast fashion, but at what cost? For those interested in preserving quality clothing over contributing to landfill waste, sashiko is the perfect place to begin.

So bring your favorite denim – a piece that needs mending or something you’d just love to see adorned – and join us as we learn foundational sashiko stitches, chart out our designs and create beautiful, striking patterns. If you don’t have a denim item you’d like to work on, swatches will be provided for you to practice on.
