A root strewn track leads from the wet mossy depths of Weindorfer's Forest up a ridge into Fagus (Nothofagus Gunii) forests. We were about a week late to see the best of the Fagus, most of the leaves lay in the hollows in the track between the tree roots. The arch of a fallen tree truck formed an "Enchanted Gateway" to the Fagus forests. The turning of the Fagus occurs after the first periods of cold weather in April and lasts for perhaps two weeks or until the first strong winds or heavy rain, making its viewing a matter of chance. It grows in a few places in Tasmania between 1,000m and 1,200m elevation. One of these locations is around Cradle Mountain in the Cradle Mountain Lake Saint Clair National Park.
