A wonderful antique Victorian intaglio pendant, elegant in its simplicity and rich in classical inspiration.
The piece is formed as a round disc pendant, set within a simple 15 carat gold rub over mount. Though simple, the setting is wonderfully engraved with an organic pattern. The setting is open to both the front and reverse, allowing light to pass through and beautifully illuminate the stone.
At the centre sits a warm toned carnelian disc, its rich orange hue glowing when worn. One side has been finely engraved as an intaglio, depicting the profile of a male figure in the classical style. From the detailing, we believe this to represent a Roman emperor, possibly Julius Caesar, though this cannot be stated with certainty.
Intaglios of this nature draw on the long tradition of classical antiquity, where carved gemstones were used as personal seals. During the Victorian period, there was a strong revival of interest in ancient Greece and Rome, making such pieces both fashionable and meaningful.
The open setting, combined with the glowing carnelian and finely carved profile, gives the pendant a wonderful sense of depth. A timeless and characterful Victorian pendant. Perfect for lovers of classical history, intaglios, and antique jewellery with enduring appeal.
