A striking Victorian signet ring, dated to 1878 its certainly an eye catching ring. Created from buttery 18 carat gold, this is as wonderful today as it was over 140 years ago. T

The ring is set with a deep black agate intaglio, its dark surface providing a dramatic setting for the finely carved design. Engraved into the stone is a lion, a powerful symbol of strength and courage, accompanied by the Latin motto “Virtute et Labore.”

This translates from Latin to “By virtue and hard work,” a phrase reflecting integrity, perseverance. Values often celebrated in heraldic jewellery of the period and is as cherished today as its was then. 

The carving is crisp and full of detail, standing out beautifully against the dark agate. The substantial gold mount adds warmth and presence to the piece. A close look will also reveal hints of a more engraved band that have softened over time.
