Basketball in a nutshell -

Basketball as a sport was invented in December 1891 by a Canadian-American Physical Education instructor named Dr James Naismith while he was teaching at the International YMCA Training school in Springfield Massachusetts, USA. The initial code published on December 21st 1891 included 13 rules with the main objective being to pass the ball among each team’s players and then score against the opposing team by throwing the ball into a fruit basket placed at height on the lower railing of the gym's balcony.

During the early games, the fruit basket used for scoring points had its bottom still sealed and intact, and after a point was scored, the game’s had to be promptly stopped in order for the school's janitor to retrieve the ball inside the basket using a ladder, but after subsequent games the bottom of the fruit basket was removed, thereby allowing the ball to freely drop to the ground.

Other notable dates for the game of basketball include March 11th 1892, which is when the first ever publicized game of Basketball was played, taking place in basketball's hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1898, six teams formed the first professional league called the National Basketball League that lasted up to 1904 when the league was subsequently abandoned. Other notable leagues were the Eastern Basketball League (Founded in 1909), The Metropolitan Basketball League (Founded in 1921), and the American Basketball League (Founded in 1925).

The first Amateur independent All-Black Basketball teams during the segregation era were established in 1906 under the auspices of the Smart Set Athletic club of Brooklyn and the St. Christopher Club of New York City and in 1907 they joined other black clubs to form an amateur all-black Olympian Athletic League that was created in New York City, but by 1950 the NBA abolished segregation.

In April 1905 a college committee oversaw control of the college game through the Basket Ball Rule Committee which was later absorbed into the now famous National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1909 with the first NCAA Basketball tournament beginning in 1939.

The Basketball Association of America was founded in June 1946 and later changed its name to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949. And in April 1996, the NBA approved the creation of the Women’s equivalent league called the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Basketball as a global international sport was first recognized at the Summer Olympic Games in 1904 when it was included as a demonstration event but later becoming a medal sport from 1936, while the International Basketball federation (FIBA) was formed on June 18th 1932 to coordinate teams and tournaments from around the world with the first world championship events taking place in Argentina between October to November 1950.
