Own an evocative piece of history. The SS France was a Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – CGT, or French Line – ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire, France. Built in 1960 and launched by Madame Charles De Gaulle. At the time of her construction in 1960, the 316m vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 345m RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004. SS France was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line – NCL- in 1979, renamed SS Norway and underwent significant modifications that better suited her for cruising duties.

Extract from the History of SS Norway cabin notices -

"For nearly twenty years, everyday travellers mingled with the rich and famous and powerful who graced the staterooms and salons of what was arguably the worlds most beloved ship. However, due to a growing preference for transatlantic travel by air, the SS France was laid up in Le Havre Harbour. There, she came to the attention of the Kloster family of Norway, Founders of the Norwegian Cruise Line who saw great potential in her. On a sunny day in 1980, exactly two decades after first being christened , She was relaunched as the worlds largest cruise ship, the SS Norway. In celebration of her return to the seas and in honour of her unique heritage , the Secretary General of the United Nations allowed her to fly the United Nations Flag (which she did to the end of her working days), the only cruise liner in the world ever to receive such an honour."
