This curious character is an antique Japanese porcelain Daruma figure. There are a wide array of Daruma out there, modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, and typically depicted as a red robed bearded man, as he is here. This is about my favorite example of all I've seen, with a wonderfully expressive face, wide nose, and painted eyes directed skyward, plus he has these finely and emphatically painted eyebrows, beard and chest hair. Seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, this figure would certainly make for a special and unusual housewarming gift, or great addition to the home alter.
I am really not certain the age on this piece; I might guess late 19th or early 20th century. It is in excellent vintage condition, with a bit of aging to the surface that I think just adds to its appeal; no chips or cracks. 3 1/4" tall x 2 3/4" wide x 2 1/2" deep.
