Edwardian Black Silk Day Dress Half Sleeve Large
Very rare piece of daily wear in a large size, from the 1910s!
Cut out of what feels like a sturdy black silk (maybe a blend?). It has long sleeves, a nipped waist line, and a long skirt ending at the ankles. Simple enough in its silhouette, it has a myriad of detailing that marks it as a special piece from the early 20th century. The square neckline is created from a panel that hooks across the front chest, attaching at the interior left side and at the waist with more hidden hooks and snaps - creating a faux belt sash across the front. Note the vertical pleating on either side of front torso. The front of skirt has a zig-zag stitch offset by decorative buttons at center of the middle and at bottom right. No labels as it was likely handmade.
If you've seen Downton Abbey, this should make you think of Mrs Hughes!
Fabric: looks and feels like silk and lace
Fit: M to L depending on how tight you tie the sash bands
Condition: incredible considering its age and delicacy. There is pin hole at front of skirt, between the two button section. That same area also shows a bit of wear and a very faint gray smudge. Similar, very faint gray smudging (hard to call it a stain) is also at the center back. The trim at the left side of bodice also shows wear at the edge, on an inch long section. There is also a small hole at the right underarm area. Overall, this is more than wearable as the issues are only noticeable when pointed out in direct light.
