Hunter Thompson was an American author & journalist. After a disrupted childhood, he briefly joined the USAF before embarking on a career in journalism. He travelled frequently, spending time in Puerto Rico & Brazil before returning to the US in the early 1960s. He found international fame with his biographical work Hell’s Angels: The Strange & Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (1967). It was the result of a years’ research of the Hells Angels, undertaken by living & riding with the gangs & recording his experiences. Thompson himself was to become a counter-cultural figure, employing his own journalistic style which he termed Gonzo; which involved the reporter becoming central to his own reportage.
He is best known for his work Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream (1972). It is a rumination on the failure of the 1960s counter-culture. It was serialized by Rolling Stone magazine, & later made the subject of the film Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas(1998), directed by Terry Gilliam & starring Johnny Depp.
