Martinu (1890-1959)
Description:
A collection of cello sonatas by Martineau, one of the leading Czech composers of the 20th century, with cello by Nouzovsky, a young leading Czech player, and piano by Weiss, who is active worldwide as an accompanist. After studying French Impressionism in Paris, where he studied with Roussel and was influenced by the French Six and Stravinsky, he escaped Nazi persecution and came to the United States. Among his three cello sonatas, No. 1, dedicated to Fournier in 1939, No. 2, dedicated to Martineau's friend Rivka in 1941, and No. 3, dedicated to the conductor Kindler, were written in 1952. The three pieces alone show how the classical style gradually took on a nationalistic and neoclassical tone. Naxos Japan
