Description:
Ferdinand Ries was born into a family of court musicians who had served the Elector of Cologne since his grandfather's time. His father was a man of character who even taught violin to Beethoven for a time. Ries received his musical education from his father, and his talent developed rapidly, but his father lost his job and his own future was cut short when the French Revolutionary Army occupied Bonn in 1794. His father entrusted his son Ferdinand to his former student, Beethoven, and a teacher-student relationship began. The cello sonata on this album was written when Ries was 15 years old, and his ambitious style clearly shows his abundant talent. Each of the other pieces, too, employs skillful compositional techniques and has a strong presence as a Romantic cello work that connects Beethoven to Mendelssohn. Naxos Japan
