[John as the ultimate form of Herreweghe. A true Passion story spun by the manner of Bach's time] "John Passion" is now available in a completely new recording on Philippe Herreweghe's own label. In his interview book "Conversations with Philippe Herreweghe" (edited by Camille de Lake/LPH026), a book commemorating his 70th birthday, Herreweghe said, "I want to spend my time from now on performing works that I feel are truly necessary for me," and each new Bach recording that he presents to the world under his own label is a Each new Bach recording on his own label is a place of great significance. In fact, this new recording of "John" is the ultimate interpretation of Bach's "John" and is full of enthusiasm. Various different editions of Bach's "John Passion" remain, and there is no definitive manuscript by the composer himself. In 1987 and 2001, Herreweghe recorded the work for the Harmonia mundi france, and the latter recording, which featured Mark Padmore as evangelist, attracted much attention for its unusual use of the second manuscript of 1725, which features the end of the first part of the "Matthew Passion" at the beginning of the work.Although the recording seems to be based on the same version as the first recording, the opening piece begins at a more up-tempo pace than the 1987 recording, and the sound is more passionate and intense than in the 1987 recording. The sense of unity that only the Collegium Vocale Ghent can create, born of the trust between the performers, makes for an exciting Passion story that is hard to describe. The evangelist is Maximilian Schmidt, who has participated in many of Herreweghe's best performances in recent years.
