Description:

The precocious prodigy Mendelssohn composed his Symphony for Strings between the ages of 12 and 14. Written to be performed at the weekly Sunday concerts held at his home, these pieces, thirteen in all (including a single-movement symphonic section), are all studies, but all are exquisite works with skillful counterpoint, as only a man who had studied the works of the Baroque and Classical periods, including J.S. Bach, could have done. The first six pieces were completed in 1821, and the remaining six and the single movement in C minor were written two years later. It is said to have been composed with the performance of his violin teacher and friend, Eduard Rietz, at the beginning of the year. Long forgotten, it was revived by Yehudi Menuhin in 1952 and attracted much attention. All of the performances by Henry Laudares and the Munich Radio Orchestra have been studio-recorded and have already been released as Nos. 1-6 and the Violin Concerto (900234), and Nos. 8 and 12 and the Symphonic Interludes (digital only), but now they are all available in one boxed set. The entire collection is now available in a boxed set. Henry Laudares] Born in Guatemala, Henry Laudares is a violinist and conductor who was introduced to the violin by his father at the age of four, and three years later performed as a soloist with an orchestra. In 1985, he won a prize in the violin section of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition, and from 1989 to 1993 he was concertmaster of the Orchestre des Operailles de Flanders. He has been a key member of the orchestra since 2001. Naxos Japan
